Dr. Dre wants to make an instrumental hip hop album about our solar system.
A recent interview with VIBE revealed the good doctor’s plans. When asked about future projects and the possibility of an instrumental record, Dre replied:
“An instrumental album is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I have the ideas for it. I want to call it The Planets. I don’t even know if I should be saying this, but fuck it. [Laughs.] It’s just my interpretation of what each planet sounds like. I’m gonna go off on that. Just all instrumental. I’ve been studying the planets and learning the personalities of each planet. I’ve been doing this for about two years now just in my spare time so to speak. I wanna do it in surround sound. It’ll have to be in surround sound for Saturn to work.”
“It’ll have to be in surround sound for Saturn to work.” Amazing. What does he mean when he says he’s been “studying the planets”? I’m picturing Eminem or Snoop in the studio, wondering why Dre isn’t behind the glass. They send an engineer to go find him, and Dre’s up on the roof with a telescope, trying to discern the orbits of Jupiter’s moons.
Does he realize Gustav Holst already charted that space? I hope so. I hope he’s planning to remix “Mars.” Everyone leave Dr. Dre alone. He needs to finish this album pronto.
