But I also love VI, happen to love the orchestral version I've heard of the opera, and maintain that this version is stupid.

The Black Mages as a concept works because of the nostalgia factor. But my point about the first album - which I should have expanded - was that he, rightfully so, picked the cream of the crop for the first album. That song selection is just better. Or he's stopped churning out interesting arrangements cause he really only likes his work up to and including VI. Or the novelty of a video game prog metal band is starting to wear off.

Either way, it hasn't stopped me from listening to this one at the gym, even though I skip a few of the tracks.

I hate to be that guy, but Chrono Trigger's excell...

I hate to be that guy, but Chrono Trigger's excellent soundtrack (and Chrono Cross' slightly less but still excellent soundtrack) was mostly composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, with Uematsu stepping in to compose some when Mitsuda started pooping blood from working too much.

Your negative feelings about this album seem to stem mostly from your lack of nostalgia for these tracks. I feel the same way about the tracklist as you do, not being an FF completest by any means, but maybe if you were a more thorough Final Fantasy fan you'd like it better?

It also sort of implies that past Black Mages albums were only good because of the nostalgia factor, which is untrue. The first album in particular is a blast to listen to even if you're not familiar with the songs, and it's too bad that they can't keep that feeling going for even three albums.
